The casino occupies the former French and Quebec pavilions from Expo 67 on Île Notre-Dame, which gives the property an architectural pedigree few gaming venues can claim — angled glass, river views and a set of interior volumes that were never designed for this purpose. As a place to stay it is defined by that island setting: parkland, the Formula 1 circuit and the rowing basin are on the doorstep, downtown is a short drive across the bridge. Restaurants range from a buffet to a well-regarded fine-dining room, and the gaming floor is one facility among several rather than the whole building.

Built into the escarpment above the Horseshoe Falls, this resort earns its name honestly: a large share of the rooms and much of the public space look directly at the water. Beyond the accommodation there is a theatre that books touring acts year-round, a spa, a shopping arcade and a spread of restaurants at several price points. The gaming floor is substantial but sits on its own levels, and guests can pass a full stay using the hotel, the theatre and the falls without entering it.

River Rock sits on the Fraser River in Richmond, minutes from Vancouver International Airport and on the rapid transit line into the city, which makes it as much an airport-adjacent conference hotel as a resort. It has its own marina, a show theatre, a large ballroom and a set of restaurants weighted toward the region’s Cantonese cooking. Rooms are split between a full-service hotel tower and a simpler lodge building, and the riverside walkway outside is popular with people who never set foot on the gaming floor.

An hour and a half north of Toronto near Orillia, Casino Rama is owned by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and functions as the anchor of a small resort complex in cottage country. The entertainment centre is the largest draw for many visitors, hosting concerts on a scale unusual for the area. The hotel side is straightforward and comfortable, with a spa, a pool and a set of restaurants; Lake Couchiching and the surrounding trails are close enough to shape how most people spend their days.
