Hotels, filed by what they actually are.
Plays Arena keeps four short lists: art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and ice hotels. Sixteen properties, written up in plain prose, with no ratings and nothing to book.
Each entry is a description, not a sales page. We say where a hotel is, what the building is like, and what it is for.
The four categories
Art Hotels
Hotels built around a collection, a commission, or a working relationship with artists — where the art is part of the building rather than decoration hung on it afterwards.
Open the categoryCapsule Hotels
Compact sleeping berths arranged in tiers, with washing, storage and lounging moved out of the room and into shared floors. Efficient by design, and far more considered than the format’s reputation suggests.
Open the categoryCasino Hotels
Full-service hotels that happen to include a gaming floor among their facilities. We describe them as hotels first: rooms, restaurants, meeting space and location, with the casino noted as one part of the property.
Open the categoryIce Hotels
Seasonal hotels rebuilt each winter from ice and compacted snow, then allowed to melt in spring. Every one of them pairs its cold rooms with heated accommodation on the same site.
Open the categoryHow this index works
- Independent and editorial — no reservations are taken here and no property pays for its entry.
- Written as prose, from general and verifiable characteristics; no star ratings, no reviews, no prices.
- Geographically open — a hotel is listed because it belongs to its category, not because of where it sits.
